One Life to Live Presents: "Soap Vixen Writing for Dummies"

Submitted by Jamey Giddens on June 29, 2008

All My Children As the World Turns Bold and Beautiful Days of Our Lives General Hospital Guiding Light One Life to Live Young and Restless Andrea Evans

What can I say about this show that hasn't been said in recent weeks? One Life to Live has truly become event television on par with the first season of Survivor, the revelation of "Who Shot Jr?" on Dallas and more importantly, the classic 80's heyday of daytime soaps.

I must admit that since I've only watched the show for a few years I'm not as emotionally attached to a lot of the characters and history as some of my fellow bloggers and podcast co-hosts, but much like I didn't get hooked on Falcon Crest until six seasons in, OLTL is definitely worth tackling a new soap obsession 40-odd years into the game. Besides I can always call up my pal Tina (DC's version, not Llanview's) and ask "Now where the hell was this Mendorra?" if need be.

What I am loving most about OLTL right now is Andrea Evans' return as Tina Lord Roberts. I've always liked Evans in her lesser roles on shows like The Bold and the Beautiful (Tawny) and Passions (Rebecca), but I sort of relegated her in my mind to playing that type of one-dimensional, campy schemer. I never imagined she could actually carry a show front and center, that is until now.

Tawny and Rebecca were obviously Tina-lite as Evans has proven in only a short amount of time while reprising her breakout role. Tina is a throwback to classic, glamour puss, complicated Mama-vixens of the past like Another World's Cecile, Santa Barbara's Gina, Melrose Place's Sydney Mancini or Y&R's Jill Foster Abbott (before she was spayed and sat out back with a nice bowl of milk and a ball of yarn while The Gloria Hour commenced).

THIS is what daytime fans want from our delicious scheming characters! Are you listening Ellen Wheeler? We don't want Dinah spending a year getting over a bump on her head on Guiding Light nor Olivia pinning over a man (Gus) she no more loved than she wanted to make out with Reva's father Hawk Shayne! That goes double for Days' Sami Brady. Who wants to see the best villainess of the 90's crying croc tears while Lucas bellows at her like toy poodle who thinks he's a pit bull? It's a sad day in Salem and Soapdom when Marlena is the one injecting people with needles while Sami's forever in need of a hankie!

I suggest the masterful Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati create a software template on how to write good soap bitches, burn it onto a DVD and then we can have Stefano strap certain other daytime execs and writers to a chair and wash it right into their brains. Just be careful not to send over a copy of Snoop's latest CD instead or all we'll get is Olivia and Dinah sipping on Gin and Juice at Company!

Emmy-nominated Andrea Evans continues her work to raise awareness of and funds for breast cancer research. She will again serve as ambassador for a breast cancer survivor's walk and she has created a special soap that will raise money for breast cancer charities. The actress returned to One Life to Live earlier this year, ending a 17-year absence.

Andrea Evans (Tina Lord, One Life to Live) continues her extensive efforts to raise money for breast cancer research and programs for survivors. In addition to serving as a celebrity ambassador for one organization, Evans has also partnered with a company to create a natural soap.

Evans has teamed up with LATHER to create Sandalwood Rose Soap, an all-natural, olive oil-based soap and a Soap for Hope Gift Set, which includes two bars of Sandalwood Rose soap and a natural wood soap dish. $5 from the sale of each Sandalwood Rose Soap and $12 from the sale of each Soap for Hope Gift Set will benefit the breast cancer programs at City of Hope, a leading biomedical research and treatment institution for cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Evans will again serve as Celebrity Ambassador for City of Hope's annual Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer events held in cities across the country. Evans, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, will join survivors across the country, and their friends and families, to take steps to support breast cancer research, treatment and education programs at City of Hope's annual Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer.

This will mark the eighth consecutive year that Evans has dedicated her time and efforts to the Walk for Hope and other related City of Hope activities.

"I am proud to once again be representing City of Hope's Walk for Hope in 2008 to continue my support of City of Hope," said Evans. "As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, this cause is near and dear to my heart. I have seen firsthand what it takes to survive this disease and, if in the process of walking, we can save even one life, it is more than worth the effort."

LATHER develops products that draw on natural ingredients and are free of synthetic colors and fragrances. Ever aware of her large, loyal fan base, Andrea specifically wanted to create a soap that would be gentle enough for sensitive skin, and favored sensual sandalwood oil - possibly evocative of the salacious characters she has played on several daytime drama series.

"We are extremely proud to be partnering with City of Hope, which is such an inspirational and well respected organization, as well as Andrea Evans, who inspires millions of people every day," explains Emilie Hoyt, President and Founder of LATHER. "Both share in LATHER's mission to help others lead a more radiant life."

Sandalwood Rose Soap retails for $8 while the Soap for Hope Gift Set, which includes two bars of Sandalwood Rose soap and a natural wood soap dish, costs $20. Both will be available for purchase beginning in September 2008.

The support of people like Ms. Evans, Walk for Hope participants and its sponsors make this lifesaving work possible."

Andrea Evans "Isn't Going Anywhere"

The soap gods are smiling down on One Life to Live fans these days. In addition to winning Director and Writing at the 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards now comes word that the recently returned Andrea Evans "isn't going anywhere."

That's right folks. In his latest Suds Report Nelson Branco reports he has it straight from Ron Carlivati. I know long time One Life to Live fans such as Daytime Confidential's Tina are extremely happy with this and as a fan seeing Andrea Evans in the role for the first time I can see why long time fans would be so happy with this news.

Since there could be many viewers such as myself who have no memory of Evan's character Tina I think it would be great if those of you who remember her from "the good-old-days" could share some of your favorite Tina storylines so that the rest of us can relive your memories.

Andrea Evans Returns to 'OLTL' After Stalking Incident

ANDREA EVANS has returned to her Emmy-nominated role as Tina Lord Roberts on "One Life to Live" after an 18-year absence -- just in time for the show's 40th anniversary, taking place on July 15.

"To know that I left 'One Life to Live' 18 years ago and that the audience still so badly wanted me to come back -- how could I say no?" she tells ET. "There is nothing more complimentary than to have your audience miss you and want you back."

Andrea says she never wanted to leave the show, but she was involved in a very scary stalking situation at that time and as the danger escalated, she realized, it was her job or her life. Of course, her decision was obvious.

"The stalking situation was petrifying for me," she recalls. "It made me leave a job I loved, a city I loved and my best friends and move on. It was a very frightening time in my life. On the other side of that, I think it has made me a better person. It gives you a whole new perspective."

Andrea went public with her situation because, at that time, as she learned, neither the police, nor the FBI could help her as there were no stalking laws on the books. And, she wants to make it clear that it isn't just celebrities who are stalked, but most often, just everyday women -- and some men.

"The good news is there are much better laws now than when it happened to me," she explains. "That is one of the only reasons I went public, to help bring about those laws. There are several women who came forward to help. I think we have. It is more of a publicized crime. The public is more aware of it."

Andrea's first day back on the air will be Tuesday, June 10.

"One Life to Live" Next Week

"One Life to Live" Next Week
June 6, 2008 9:00 PDT By Jesse Murray

Shootings, diamonds, two big returns, and a dog named David Vickers. And we mean literally, not a figurative description of David's habits. Next week on "One Life to Live" is out of control!

Andrea Evans returns to the show as Tina Lord. She's armed with some bling, a tiny frou-frou dog she calls "David Vickers" (after her not-so-beloved ex), and the title of "Crown Princess of Mendorra." Yep, Tina's royalty now. And still a royal (but lovable) pain-in-the-you-know-what to the good folk of Llanview. Because someone connected to her ends up dead. She's not the only familiar face that resurfaces. Susan Haskell returns as Marty Saybrooke after a ten-year absence (minus the occasional guest spot). Marty, the character, was presumed dead last year (played by Christina Chambers), but she's living and breathing. Who's the first person she encounters? Why, Todd (Trevor St. John). You know, the guy that raped her?

Meanwhile, someone gets arrested, someone leaves town, and Blair (Kassie Depaiva) starts asking Addie (Pamela Payton-Wright) about her father!

Are you excited for Marty and Tina's returns?

ABC Hot Sheet!

Andrea Evans Q&A

Andrea Evans Q&A

Fan favorite Andrea Evans returns as the trouble making Tina Lord on June 11. ABC.com sat down with the actress to ask her questions the fans have been dying to know.

OLTL fans have been asking for your return since you left. Can you describe the feeling when you returned to OLTL for your first day of work?
It was like coming home! I grew up on this set with so many of these people. Slipping into Tina again was like a glove with the perfect fit.

Which OLTL actor were you most excited to see again?
Erika (Slezak, Viki). I've known Erika for all these years. She's the only actor still on the show from when I first started! She was a huge mentor to me so I was especially excited to see her.

What are the most important things in your life right now?
My daughter. Hands down. My husband, my family, my dogs, my job. Really the same things that are important to everyone else!

In the past, you have been a columnist for Healthy Cooking. Do you prefer writing over acting?
No. I mean, I like it. It came out of now here and I was thrilled to do it, as well as wonderfully flattered and surprised. But I'm an actress to my bones!

One of your hobbies is cooking, what is your favorite dish to cook?
Vegetable Lasagna. It's really my husband's favorite dish. I'm a vegetarian and he's a tried and true meat eater, but he loves this dish.

You adopted a baby girl in 2004. How do you feel about adopting more children?I'm very open to it. It's something my husband and I are talking about.

You have always played the bad girl on OLTL, how would you describe yourself off screen?
I am so not that! In fact, I joke with our costume designer whenever she calls me for a fitting for Tina and say "You're calling me in my other life as a mild mannered housewife." My life's really like a lot of other people's.

Do you ever want Tina to settle down?
I don't think Tina will ever settle down. It's just not her. I think she'd like to, but she just incapable of it. Her idea of settling down and my idea kind of settling down are not the same.

Do you want to say anything to the fans who have been so excited for your return?
Thank you! I am so grateful that people are excited for my return. Frank (Valentini, executive producer), Ron (Carlivati, head writer) and I worked really hard to try to live their expectations. I'm pleased, and I think everyone else will be too!

FAN FAVORITE ANDREA EVANS MAKES HER TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO ABC DAYTIME’S “ONE LIFE TO LIVE” IN JUNE

As "One Life to Live" prepares to celebrate its 40th Anniversary on ABC, acclaimed actress Andrea Evans returns to the series to play one of daytime television's most beloved bad girls, Tina Lord Roberts, starting in June. Ms. Evans originated the role in 1978 and played the popular character until 1990. During that run she received an Emmy Award nomination for her wonderfully devious portrayal. Tina's return to Llanview means the kind of trouble only she can create and will open the door for another fan favorite to return.

"Even though Andrea has not appeared on OLTL since 1990, she has remained among the most requested characters to return to the show," said executive producer Frank Valentini. "I welcome her home to OLTL and to the role where she made an indelible mark on our audience."
"For many years, both fans of mine and 'One Life to Live' have wanted me to return to the show, said Ms. Evans. "Now that the timing is right, I'm thrilled to be returning to the role of Tina which I've always held near and dear to my heart and I'm looking forward to working once again with all my friends and 'family' at 'One Live to Live.'"

Tina has endured a life-altering experience and will have a mysterious connection to one of Llanview's most powerful citizens. Upon her return, Tina will first cross paths with her sister Viki Davidson (Erika Slezak) and her brother Todd (Trevor St. John). Her appearance in town will spark a major story that will take place throughout the summer.

Ms. Evans is one of the genres most dynamic performers and in addition to "One Life to Live", she has appeared on "The Young and the Restless," "The Bold and the Beautiful" and most recently "Passions." In addition to her daytime roles, Andrea has an impressive list of credits spanning film, primetime, radio and theatre. In addition to her acting career, she dedicates her time to such charitable organizations as The City of Hope and numerous animal rights groups.

Ms. Evans continues to reside in CA with her husband Steve and young daughter Kylie Lyn.

Emmy Award-winning "One Life to Live," created by Agnes Nixon, was launched July 15, 1968. Frank Valentini executive-produces. Ron Carlivati is the headwriter. The popular drama consistently ranks among the top five in the key demographic of Women 18-49. "One Life to Live" airs MONDAY-FRIDAY (2:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

ANDREA EVANS TO GUEST STAR ON VH1’S NEW “I KNOW MY KID’S A STAR” SERIES, APRIL 24

Soap opera star Andrea Evans, who is currently seen on “Passions,” will guest star on the new VH1 reality series “I Know My Kid’s A Star.”

On the April 24th episode, which is the sixth installment, Ms. Evans will act in scenes with young talents whose performances will be judged and critiqued by former child star and executive producer of this series, Danny Bonaduce, and Hollywood casting director and manager, Marki Costello. They will be looking for one great, aspiring, triple-threat stage-hungry kid who they are seeking to identify as a potential star, as well as training their parents to deal with the difficulties of show business.

The eight episode weekly one-hour series, which premieres March 20th at 10 PM, will feature 10 parent/child teams living in a house in Los Angeles, willing to do whatever it takes to breakthrough in Hollywood. Each episode presents a different challenge for the kids, whether it’s auditioning for a cartoon voice-over, trying out for a part in a horror flick, being asked to cry on cue during an audition etc. In each episode, the parents will also have their own challenge without their kids to see if they are ready to handle the business of Hollywood. In the end, one team will emerge as the winner and receive $50,000 in cash as well as having the child given a one year contract for representation by Marki Costello.
